Adam Patel

1. Can you give us a brief summary of your career so far?

My career has been short and sweet so far. I joined Bermans as a trainee, after graduating from University, and started things off in the contentious world by joining our Litigation, and Insolvency departments. A year later, I had moved to the Corporate and ABL teams and started on the transactional work.

Despite being a litigator at heart, I really enjoyed the pace and difficulty of the ABL transactions which definitely helped in turning me away from contentious work; when I was offered a position in the ABL team following my qualification, I couldn’t say no.

2. What area of the law do you specialise in and why?

I specialise in the law as it relates to finance and asset-based lending. I act for a number of banks, finance houses and lenders in the provision of finance to companies and individuals for a variety of reasons ranging for general working capital purposes, to the funding of corporate acquisitions and everything in-between.

3. Is there a case or a particular piece of work you were proud to be involved with, if so why?

I assisted with the financing of a group acquisition by one of our clients. It involved over 20 group companies and the facility size was in the tens of millions. We were instructed to deal with the security package being taken by the bank and advising on the consolidation of its existing facilities.

It was a fast-paced deal, involving the drafting of 50+ bespoke, complex security documents and ancillaries (c.3000 pages based on the number of boxes of paper I went through at the time) and we managed to pull that off without a hitch.

4. Away from the law what are your interests and passions?

I am a keen Archer (and a member of an Archery Club in Greater Manchester) and a big snow sports/snowboarding enthusiast.

I have also picked up running since the first lockdown last year and I am now training to run my first marathon.

Finally, and more generally, I’m a great fan of all things nerdy.

Bullet Round

Films (Top 3):

Shawshank Redemption, The Dark Knight and 12 Angry Men

Music (3 tracks to take on Desert Island):

El Camino by the Black Keys – I am proud to say that I know every single lyric (and could drum) to every single song on this album

Dr Feel Good by Mötley Crüe – I tend to blare this out loud much to my neighbour’s dismay (sorry!)

Bad by Michael Jackson – I don’t think I need to say anything more on this. It’s a timeless classic.

It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia – The most outrageous comedy I’ve ever seen. Who doesn’t love Danny DeVito?

Mad Men – I have re-watched this c.9 times, would highly recommend

Breaking Bad – (RIP Game of Thrones)

Podcasts you listen to:

The Ricky Gervais Show – Karl Pilkington being one of the underrated geniuses of our time

Favourite book:

Of Mice and Men– I’m a big fan of John Steinbeck’s visceral writing style

This one Risotto I had in Italy – I can’t remember the restaurant’s name, but it was unbelievably good.

Holiday destination:

Prague is my 2nd home (being half Czech) and favourite city, so I’ll go with that.

If you could do anything other than being a Lawyer, what would you be and why?

I’d be a Chef. I imagine there’s a similarity in the pace and stress/time management, which I think already have the hang of and, whilst I don’t like to brag about myself toooooo much, I’m a pretty bloody good cook.

3 people for a dinner party and why?

Ricky Gervais, Karl Pilkington and Stephen Merchantthey can deal with the entertainment and I can just sit back and relax.
