You will usually need a sponsor licence to employ someone to work for you from outside the UK. This includes citizens of the EU (except Irish citizens and those with settled or pre-settled statis under EU Settlement Scheme), Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland.
Data up to the end of June 2021, shows that just over 6 million people have applied to the EU Settlement Scheme.
Sponsoring someone does not guarantee that they will get a visa to work for you in the UK. You should seek advice about specific roles within your business.
How to get a sponsor licence
1. Check your business is eligible.
2. Check if your job is suitable for sponsorship.
3. Choose the type of licence you want to apply for – this will depend on what type of worker you want to sponsor.
4. Decide who will manage sponsorship within your business.
5. Apply online and pay the fee.
You must assign a certificate of sponsorship to each foreign worker you employ. This is a digital record and each certificate has its own number.
These licences are valid for 4 years and are dependent on you meeting your responsibilities as a sponsor.
